HubSpot and Pipedrive are the two CRMs small and mid-sized sales teams shortlist most often. They're both good. They're good at different things.

Pick HubSpot if you want a free start, or marketing and sales in one place. Pick Pipedrive if you want the simplest pipeline tool your reps will use every day, at a predictable price.

Price: free versus fair

HubSpot wins at the start: its free CRM costs nothing for two users. Pipedrive has no free plan, only a 14-day trial.

The picture flips as you grow. HubSpot's sequences and automation sit in Sales Hub Professional, which costs about ten times as much per seat as Starter and adds a one-off onboarding fee. Pipedrive's Growth plan gives you email sync and automations for a fraction of that.

Ease of use

Pipedrive is easier. It opens on your pipeline, deals are cards you drag between stages, and there isn't much else to learn. Most teams are working in it on day one.

HubSpot is more powerful but busier. There are more menus, more settings and more to configure. If you have someone who enjoys setting up systems, that's fine. If not, Pipedrive will get used more.

Email and calling

Both connect to Gmail and Outlook and log emails to the right contact. HubSpot's free plan already includes email tracking and templates. Pipedrive needs the Growth plan for full email sync.

Both offer built-in calling, but neither is a real dialer for high-volume cold calling. If calling is the core of your process, also look at Close.

Automation and follow-up

This is where you feel the price difference. HubSpot's sequences, which send a series of personal follow-up emails until someone replies, are excellent but need Professional. Pipedrive's automations are simpler, but they're available on a cheaper plan.

Whichever you choose, the tool won't write good follow-ups for you. Our follow-up guide has templates that work in both.

Reporting

HubSpot has the stronger reporting, especially once marketing data is involved: you can see which campaign produced which deal. Pipedrive's reports cover what most sales managers check weekly: deals won, pipeline by stage, conversion rates and activity per rep.

Our verdict

  • Solo or two sellers, little budget: HubSpot free.
  • Team of 3–15 that wants a sharp pipeline tool: Pipedrive Growth.
  • Marketing and sales under one roof, or growing fast: HubSpot, and budget for Professional.

Try both with ten of your real deals for a week. You'll know which one fits within two days.
